Lisbon, the capital and largest city of Portugal, is one of the oldest cities in the world. "Caesar made it the municipal named Felicitas Julia." (Wikipedia) After the infamous 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which nearly devastated Portugal, Lisbon was rebuilt with most urban rules and structures which still applies to today´s urbanization architecture.
It truly is a city steeped in history, rich in culture and currently, silently struggling with modernization, economic crisis and commercialization. When you arrive at the Lisbon Portela Airport and you have 24 hours or less to get to know the city, then you should demand that the cab driver take you to Bairro Alto.
