The hospitality industry is known for having plenty of job opportunities and lots of room for advancement. Food service is one of the biggest subdivisions of this market, and more and more young adults are flocking to restaurant jobs that allow them flexible hours, good earning potential, and the chance to interact with others in a fun environment. While all of these benefits of food service work are true, these jobs also bring with them long hours, intense physical demands, and plenty of stress. There are, however, several ways to beat the odds and stay at the top of the food chain, so to speak.
Stay Energized With Healthy Snacking
One of the hardships in any restaurant job is the long, busy shifts with little or no time to stop for a meal. Often times, food service workers go up to ten hours without eating. When this happens, the body, without the proper amount of calories to burn, begins to draw from its natural energy storage. This leaves a person feeling tired, weak, irritable, and sometimes even sick.
Keeping a high-protein snack on hand is a great way to avoid the hazards of not eating throughout a restaurant shift. Almonds are a smart choice; a handful will fit easily into a small baggie, and eating a few at a time will provide the necessary protein and calories to keep the body functioning well. Trail mixes are also a good option, but eating a mix that has a high sugar content (sweetened fruit, chocolate chips, yogurt clusters) can cause blood sugar levels to peak and then plummet, making a person feel worse than if he had not eaten at all.
