Bangkok doesn't have a dedicated gallery district, so it isn't easy in a day or two to see all the best galleries showing contemporary Thai art. These three galleries are all close to mass transit train lines. And in the case of Tonson and La Lanta, visits can even be squeezed in on lunch breaks or visa forays to nearby embassies. The first and second parts of this series covered galleries in the vicinity of Silom and Sathorn roads. The fourth and final article covers the three ARDEL galleries, two of which are located in Bangkok proper.

Tonson Gallery

100 Tonson Gallery is probably the only space in this series which was specifically built to be a gallery. A box of 100 square meters, it isn't especially large, but it has very high ceilings with skylights. It is well adapted to all sorts of media, installations and conceptual art. Although Tonson has been around for more than a dozen years, it has picked up the pace of its shows in recent years. It mounts between four and six exhibitions each year. It features both foreign and Thai artists, usually very established ones. Each year it exhibits some works that have appeared in international art fairs such as Basel and Art Dubai.

Two recent events were concocted by internationally known Thai artists Rirkrit Tiravanija (in which viewers contributed wall drawings) and Sakarin Krue-on (it entailed cooking curry in the gallery) as ways to explore the country's never-ending political upheavals. The gallery has also recently shown acrylic figurative paintings by Thanet Awsinsiri, teak sculptures by Utai Nopsiri, and bronze sculptures by Chatchai Puipia.
