Some centuries ago the plush area of London known as Mayfair was mostly farmland and the River Tyburn, which now flows underground, ran through the fields and meadows. An annual fourteen-day May Fair took place and this how the famous London area of Mayfair got its name. The fair was initially for the sale of livestock but it expanded into all manner of entertainment such as gambling, boxers and jugglers, to name a few, and no doubt plenty of beer as well, and in 1708 it was banned for being disorderly and boisterous.

The Arrival of London’s Shepherd Market

Shepherd Market takes its name from Edward Shepherd, an architect who was commissioned to develop the area. By the mid-18th century it had become a fashionable residential district which included a duck pond, a theatre and a two-story market.
