Sunk Costs And Market Structure

Is real justice really possible? That is, justice for those who have no power. In the last month we've seen people all over the world from countries in the Middle East to cities in the United States - from Madison, Wisconsin to Ohio - all protesting, all looking for what they perceive as justice. They want some degree of control over their lives from their living conditions to their income. But can it really be achieved by those who are dependent on a democratic power structure fueled by capitalism that could not exist if there were no people at the bottom?

Also, what happens when those in power decide they would rather die than relinquish anything to those whose lives they have controlled for decades? Real justice can never take place in a society where there are different levels of power because the strong will always exploit the weak. However, people are beginning to get tired. The idea that “that's just the way things are” is beginning to wear thin as people are starting to believe, when they finally get fed up and band together, that they can change things. But can they?

What is Freedom?

We here in America we define freedom as the ability to make decisions concerning our lives with no government interference. Examples include what religion we practice to voting to free speech. But how free are we? The majority of Americans work for a living, so they aren't as free as they might think. If you aren't able to stay in bed in the morning and decide when and if you want to get up, are you really free? So it would seem that in a democratic society only those who are wealthy and actually control their own destiny are free.
